Every year in January, the Dixon Fire Department spends a week teaching first-grade students the importance of fire safety and prevention. The department utilizes the F.R.E.D. (Fire Ready Every Day) program as a teaching aid. Initially begun in the early 1990’s, the F.R.E.D. program assists members in reviewing the many different safety topics. Topics that include, fire hazards at home, 911 uses, escape plans, stop, drop, and roll, stay, low and go, and familiarization of firefighters gear.

The children are very receptive to this program because of the interactive activities and coloring book that accompanies the different lessons. The members of Dixon Fire Department look forward to this presentation every year. It gives us a great opportunity to spend time with the children and teach them the fundamentals of fire safety.
