TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2018

A major snowfall event has been predicted for later tonight and tomorrow morning with snowfall amounts ranging from 6 to 11 inches. Jim Canterbury, our Streets Manager, has given four ways citizens can help our crews out:

  1. Plan ahead and limit unnecessary travel. Stock up on food and movies before the predicted snowfall. The plows are more efficient at snow removal when there are fewer number of vehicles on the road.
  2. Make room for the snowplows. The blade on the snowplow is 11ft. to 12ft. wide. It’s harder for the plows to maneuver around the cars in the residential areas, especially when cars are parked on both sides of the street.
  3. Shovel snow onto the yard or grassy area between the sidewalk and street. Please do not shovel snow onto the streets.
  4. Be seen. If you are out driving on the streets, please make sure your headlights are on. Make sure that your vehicle is visible to the snowplow.

HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

Snowplow drivers will be out today until about 9 P.M. on Thursday, February 8, 2018. Snow plowing will stop overnight. Snowplowing will begin again on Friday, February 9, 2018 at approximately 5 A.M.

In the downtown area, snow will be pushed to the middle of the street. Crews will collect the snow once the snow has stopped and the rest of the streets throughout Dixon are clear.

ODD/EVEN PARKING PROCEDURE:

With the anticipated snowfall tonight, we want to remind citizens of the applicable ordinance.  The Dixon Police Department has made a big push last night and again this morning to get vehicles moved so the streets will be clean for the impending storm.  If we get the anticipated snow storm, the snow ordinance below will be in effect in the following days. Our agency does not want to tow vehicles as it costs the owners a minimum of $150 for the tow and $75 for the snow parking violation.

The City of Dixon would like to remind citizens of the Even/Odd parking procedure. The procedure was adopted by the City Council in 2011.

This ordinance is in effect when there is more than 2 inches of snow on the street between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M.:

  • On even numbered days (ex. – Dec. 20th), cars will be required to park on the even numbered side of the street (ex. – the side of the street 320 West 9th Street is located on).
  • On odd numbered days (ex. – Dec. 21st), cars will be required to park on the odd numbered side of the street (ex. – the side of the street 321 West 9th Street is located on).
  • Residents who live on streets where parking is only permitted on one side of the road are still required to follow the ordinance. Residents are encouraged to use their driveway until the road has been cleared. If there are not parking options for your residents, please contact the police department, so arrangements can be made.
  • Even/Odd parking rules do not apply to the Central Business District. No parking is allowed in the Central Business District, to include parking lots, between 2:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M., so the city crews can clean the streets and lots for the next business day.

Once a side of the road has been cleared for an entire block, parking can resume as normal. The fine for “Snow Parking” violations is $75.00 and the vehicles will be towed. If anyone has questions about this ordinance, please contact the Dixon Police Department at (815) 288-4411.

We appreciate your support, cooperation, and patience.
